Evaluations:
As MYBA grows, our goal is to start offering more programming for competitive and developmental athletes. To start growing our more competitive streams, we will begin to evaluate athletes at the beginning of our season to ensure they are placed on a team that will benefit their athletic development. This would give players with limited experience a chance to learn at their experience level, and it would also give higher calibre athletes a chance to learn at their experience and skill level.
Evaluations are dependant on registrations, coaches, and gym availability.
U11 Programming *NEW THIS YEAR*:
At the 11U level, all athletes will undergo evaluations with those INTERESTED and SELECTED (as noted on registration) given the opportunity to play in the more competitive U11 EYBA league. These selected athletes (gender specific teams) will be required to pay an additional fee of 40$.
There is more cost associated with the team playing in the EYBA for the following reasons:
Games in EYBA will be in and around Edmonton, while HL games are strictly in Morinville.
When placing teams together in the HL, we do that through the initial evaluation and try to balance skill and age. This isn’t always full proof so teams can be unfortunately unbalanced.
For EYBA, regardless of how we put the teams together, the EYBA seeding rounds take care of placing teams where they fit into all of the EYBA’s league. So for example, a team that starts off in EYBA’s U11 Tier 4, could move down to Tier 5 or up to Tier 3, depending on results in two (3-5 game) seeding rounds.
NOTE: Both our HL and EYBA league play 4v4 games, lowered hoops, and use the size 5 basketball.
HL teams are CO-ED and EYBA teams are gender specific.
U9 Program *UPDATED THIS YEAR*:
This is a newly co-ed program working to grow our athletes understanding and love of the game. If numbers allow, these athletes may start playing some modified games in the 2nd half of the season.
U18 Program:
Our U18 program is split into two separate seasons. Fall runs September to November and Winter runs December to March. Athletes participating on a high school VARSITY team are not permitted to play on a non-school team of the same sport.
Practices:
Practices may take place any day of the week. Weekday practices would be between the hours of 6pm-10:00pm.
Athletes on U15 and U18 teams MAY have 2 practices per week, dependant on gym availability. Practices are 90 minutes long for most teams.
At times, school gyms are under "blackout" days, which means the court is not able to be used. In this instance, teams may be combined with another team for practice or rescheduled if we can get the gym space. Under rare circumstances, teams may have their practice cancelled for that week. Please check the website each week.
Games:
We run a U11 House League with games in Morinville. As our league grows, we may have games in other Sturgeon County communities. We will try to offer U11 EYBA teams this season (tryout based) depending on enrolment and interest. These would be gender specific.
Our U13-U18 teams play in the EYBA league.
Coach/Athlete Requests:
While you are welcome to give a request, we cannot guarantee they will be honoured and, with our growing association, they likely won't be able to be honoured. MYBA does everything for the best interest of the teams and the athletes involved and we are experienced in knowing how to set up teams to benefit the players. Our association is for the players and their development and we expect to have the support of all parents/guardians with this. We ask that parents/guardians encourage their athletes to participate on teams with athletes they may or may not know, and learn from coaches they may or may not have worked with before.
Only under extreme circumstances with coach/athlete and athlete/athlete requests be considered.
